Our Phones, Our Friendships, Our Freedom

Our phones are not accessories, but psychologically potent devices that change not just what we do but who we are.

I think Sherry Turkle is on to something compelling here in identifying how this technology is shaping not only our conversations and our relationships, but also our alone time.  Being present and attentive when we are with others, focusing and imagining and engaging in inner dialogue when we are alone – all of these interactions are shaped by simply having our phones “available.”

When I taught a high school media literacy course, we would always return to the question of whether we control the technology/medium or it controls us.  Always a fair question to ask….
